An actor's role may also involve education, training or therapy, as well as entertainment.An acting career inevitably incorporates periods of unemployment, underemployment and alternative employment.Work activities vary from actor to actor and even for the same actor, depending on the contract. However, activities include varying combinations of the following:
job seeking and networking;
liaising with an agent;
preparing for and attending auditions;
learning lines and rehearsing;
researching or undertaking activities to help prepare for a part;
discussing interpretation and delivery with other members of the company and the director;

performing in a studio or 'on location' for film, television, internet and radio broadcast;
doing voice-overs for advertisements or recording audiobooks;

It is essential to realise that, on average, actors spend about 80% of their working life 'resting' (i.e. not employed as an actor), so it is important to have other ways of being occupied and generating an income.
Actors need to possess different skills, depending on their medium of choice. For instance, theater actors need to have great voice projection while film actors need more subtle movements and expressions as audiences can view them close-up. Actors often have genre specializations, such as comedy, drama, musicals, or action. The more versatile and talented an actor is, the more opportunities available for him.
Actors are performing artists who are generally under the field of entertainment. Actors may act in films, television, radio, or in theater. Actors follow scripts written by writers and therefore are the media that communicate writers’ thoughts to audiences.There is a wide range when it comes to actors’ salaries, depending on medium and popularity. Actors in Broadway earn a minimum of $1,422 per week. Other theater actors earn around $500 to $900 per week. Top Hollywood actors can receive more than $20,000,000 per film.Hiring of actors and actresses was expected to increase by approximately 11% between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). The growing numbers of satellite and cable companies were expected to create more jobs for actors and actresses. The increase in popularity of American films in foreign countries was projected to also produce more job openings.Acting jobs were also expected to rise as interactive media and online movies become more mainstream. Many people enter this field seeking fame and fortune, but often they go on to other fields because of long work hours, sporadic acting jobs and meager wages. This trend may produce a steady stream of work for the most dedicated performers.An actress is responsible for translating a writer’s ideas into a full-blown character with a unique set of gestures, accent, body language, movement and even trademark dialogues. This can be done on stage, radio, television, video or motion picture productions to entertain, instruct or inform an audience. Depending on the script, an actress must interpret comic or drama roles through hours of rehearsing, training and studying real-life people. Education/Experience Requirements: Degrees in fine arts, film, television, radio, performing arts and other related fields. Most employers do not have educational requirements, but experience as an actress is preferred,whether from drama or dialect coaches, local theatre groups, school drama club, acting courses, acting conservancies or other types of acting experience. Skills: Ability to create different believable facial expressions and accents; capture the audience by making them laugh, cry and become excited, shocked and scared; narrate or do voice-overs for video games, animation, advertisements, audio books and other similar work. An actress may also be required to sing, dance, play instruments or other entertainment-related skills. The tasks and required skills of an actress may vary significantly depending on employer needs.
